Lethe
by Madeleine Braun
“Poet Madeleine Braun has written a strikingly confessional narrative poem with such seeming ease and fluidity of style befitting its title, Lethe, as a flowing river, but of the underworld. Many readings later I still wonder at this gifted poet’s creation: her innovative classical and cultural learning and her use of all the traditional craft available to poets for ages but re-invented in a blazing new way.
The large format befits the poem. One page flows dramatically into the next and when opened to two pages the canvas seems vast enough to hold Braun’s learned journey into the underworld. Remember we are reading much about myth and myth of the largest proportion. The kingdom of the dead was considered larger than that of the living.
Lethe reads as well as an ancient river flows, a riverbed perhaps older than humanity.” — Ron Romanowski
